23 of 31 Days of Halloween

I was challenged by my local Barnes & Noble to develop a list of 31 horror movies to watch, one a day for October. My only problem is that I couldn't pick just one.

For October 23, enjoy the following picks!

Horror Author Joe Chianakas pick-of-the-day:

THE SHINING

Image result for The Shining

I can't imagine NOT having this on my list, although I typically save it for the first snow storm of the year. Yes, I love watching this movie it snows hard enough to trap you in the house. Isn't that the way it should be done?

Regardless, it's a classic, and if you're one of the few people who hasn't seen it, WATCH IT. Stephen King actually hates this movie adaptation, and there's a long story there. I love the book AND I love this movie.

Available on: Xfinity On Demand

Rabbit in Red pick-of-the-day (a movie referenced in my horror series):

CANDYMAN

Image result for Candyman

I love this movie. Say his name five times. Go ahead-- I dare you! Great music, great atmosphere, creepy settings, bees, hooks, more! What's not to love?

Available on: Starz/Encore

ZOMBIELAND

Fantastic choice here. Twinkies, fun "rules" to survive, the coolest cameo EVER, and just a fun story: Zombieland is easily one of the best horror comedies.

Available on: SyFy

22 of 31 Days of Halloween

I was challenged by my local Barnes & Noble to develop a list of 31 horror movies to watch, one a day for October. My only problem is that I couldn't pick just one.

For October 22, enjoy the following picks!

Horror Author Joe Chianakas pick-of-the-day:

SAW

Image result for saw movie

I think there are seven films in the series, right? I'm not sure I've seen them all. It gets a little blurry after the third one. But this one? I remember seeing the first in the movie theater, and I experienced a literal jaw-drop at the ending. No joke. It's one of my all-time favorite endings. Fantastic and horrifying-- just what you want in a horror movie.

Available on: Xfinity On Demand

Rabbit in Red pick-of-the-day (a movie referenced in my horror series):

THE HILLS HAVE EYES

Image result for The Hills Have eyes

The purists may not like the remake, but if I'm being honest, I enjoy the remake as much if not more than Wes Craven's original. It's got jumps, action, and a hell of a creepy atmosphere.

Available on: Showtime

The Magnificent Movie Emporium pick (join the movie group by clicking the link if you enjoy discussing your favorite movies!):

Re-Animator

Image result for Re-Animator

A mix of gore and humor make this another great 80s horror comedy! Have you seen this one? Jump over to the Magnificent Movie Emporium on Facebook and let us know!

Available on: Netflix

Day 21 of 31 Days of Halloween!

I was challenged by my local Barnes & Noble to develop a list of 31 horror movies to watch, one a day for October. My only problem is that I couldn't pick just one.

For October 21, enjoy the following picks!

Horror Author Joe Chianakas pick-of-the-day:

THEY LIVE

Image result for They Live

I love this one for so many reasons. It starts with Rowdy Roddy Piper (RIP) and the classic line "I came here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of bubblegum." Yes, it's that fun, but it's even deeper than that. It's got something to say about conformity, and becoming brainwashed zombies, don't you think?

Available on: Cinemax

Rabbit in Red pick-of-the-day (a movie referenced in my horror series):

HALLOWEEN III: THE SEASON OF THE WITCH

Image result for Halloween III

So, as a kid, I fell in love with Halloween I and II and Michael Myers. When I heard there was a part III, I biked to the video store to rent it. When I came home, I enthusiastically popped in the VHS tape to enjoy the latest Myers slashfest. I was HUGELY disappointment. No Michael Myers. Nothing of the sorts. How dare they?!

Years went by, and after I stopped being bitter because I was a kid who just didn't know better, I gave it a second chance. Not bad, I thought. Then another year I watched it again. That's pretty clever, actually.

Now, I love it and watch it every Halloween. The catchy jingle, a similar theme to THEY LIVE at times, and originality: it's a good flick. If you look up why there's no Michael, you'll understand that the producers had wanted to do an American Horror Story kind of series. It just didn't work out, because stupid kids like me got annoyed and didn't know better :)

Available on: AMC, iTunes, Amazon

The Magnificent Movie Emporium pick (join the movie group by clicking the link if you enjoy discussing your favorite movies!):

THE DESCENT

Image result for The Descent

The critics loved it, and so did the users over at Rotten Tomatoes. An all-female cast, trapped in caves, the epitome of claustrophobia: it's a haunting ride! Do you like it? Head over to The Magnificent Movie Emporium Facebook group and tell us about it!

Available on: iTunes. Amazon

Day 20 of 31 Days of Halloween!

I was challenged by my local Barnes & Noble to develop a list of 31 horror movies to watch, one a day for October. My only problem is that I couldn't pick just one.

For October 20, enjoy the following picks!

Horror Author Joe Chianakas pick-of-the-day:

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW LIVE

Image result for Rocky Horror Live Fox

Set the DVR. Gather the family. Have a sing-along and let's hope this is every bit as fun and great as the original!

Available on: FOX

Rabbit in Red pick-of-the-day (a movie referenced in my horror series):

THE STRANGERS

Image result for The Strangers

"Because you were home." DAMN! This one gets me every time. It's probably the scariest movie I've seen as an adult. I used to leave my house unlocked all the time. Seriously. Didn't like the attitude that I was afraid of what's outside. After years of living that way, this movie got under my skin and I locked my doors. Always have, since the night I first watched this. SO GOOD!

Available on: iTunes. Amazon

The Magnificent Movie Emporium pick (join the movie group by clicking the link if you enjoy discussing your favorite movies!):

SLITHER

Image result for Slither horror movie

Okay, Dave, you picked one I have NOT seen. I know of it-- that movie cover, c'mon! It looks like pure gore, which means I'm guessing I'd like it. Have any of you readers seen it? Head over to The Magnificent Movie Emporium Facebook Group and convince me that I should watch it :)

Day 19 of 31 Days of Halloween!

I was challenged by my local Barnes & Noble to develop a list of 31 horror movies to watch, one a day for October. My only problem is that I couldn't pick just one.

For October 19, enjoy the following picks!

Horror Author Joe Chianakas pick-of-the-day:

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

Image result for the rocky horror picture show

SPOILER ALERT: The live TV musical will be on FOX tomorrow night, so I'll be listing it again tomorrow (but the live version, not this one). I thought: what better way to prepare and get excited for the new live version than to watch the classic! Let's do the time warp again!

Available on: iTunes, Amazon

Rabbit in Red pick-of-the-day (a movie referenced in my horror series):

SILENT HOUSE

Image result for Silent House

The acting in this one is GREAT. I didn't want to give credit to an Olsen, but Elizabeth Olsen captures terror and fear perfectly. It's a great story, with a delightful twist.

Available on: iTunes, Amazon

The Magnificent Movie Emporium pick (join the movie group by clicking the link if you enjoy discussing your favorite movies!):

THE FOG

Image result for The Fog 1980

Debra Hill and John Carpenter (both of the original Halloween fame) have their names written on this one, so that's all I need to give it a watch! Like this one? Head over to The Magnificent Movie Emporium Facebook group and tell us what you think!

Available on: iTunes, Amazon

Day 18 of 31 Days of Halloween!

I was challenged by my local Barnes & Noble to develop a list of 31 horror movies to watch, one a day for October. My only problem is that I couldn't pick just one.

For October 18, enjoy the following picks!

Horror Author Joe Chianakas pick-of-the-day:

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

Image result for the texas chainsaw massacre

It wouldn't be Halloween without this one, right?! Start with the original 1974 version and then watch the 2003 remake. I REALLY like the 2003 version. Haven't liked any other since that one, but I think it has the right characters and atmosphere to create a creepy, messed-up story. But start with 1974 and see what created the legendary story we have today.

Available on: 1973 version is on Showtime, the 2003 version is on SyFy as of the time of this post

Rabbit in Red pick-of-the-day (a movie referenced in my horror series):

SLEEPY HOLLOW

Image result for Sleepy Hollow

All right, first let me say that I'm not actually on Johnny Depp fan. Sorry. Dude is too weird for me. But back when this came out, I was a Depp fan. That's not what I like the movie. I like it for the atmosphere. It's dark and dreary, the kind of movie to watch on a cold, wet October night.

Available on: Netflix

The Magnificent Movie Emporium pick (join the movie group by clicking the link if you enjoy discussing your favorite movies!):

MIRRORS

This is a fantastic pick. I stumbled across this movie on Netflix one day and was very pleasantly surprised. Watch it and head over to the Magnificent Movie Emporium Facebook group and let us know what you think!

Day 17 of 31 Days of Halloween!

I was challenged by my local Barnes & Noble to develop a list of 31 horror movies to watch, one a day for October. My only problem is that I couldn't pick just one.

For October 17, enjoy the following picks!

Horror Author Joe Chianakas pick-of-the-day:

THE MONSTER SQUAD

Image result for the monster squad

"Wolman's got nards!"

I can't love this movie any more. Maybe it's because I grew up with it and saw it as a child, or maybe it's just THAT good. Either way, give this one a spin for a fun Halloween night. You've got classic monsters, a Goonies like gang battling for survival, fun horror references, and just an absolute ton of fun.

Available on: iTunes

Rabbit in Red pick-of-the-day (a movie referenced in my horror series):

FRIGHT NIGHT

Image result for Fright Night

Easily one of my favorite 80s horror movies. It's got the music, the comedy, the scares, and everything you love about 80s horror. MUST WATCH. I love the remake, too. Watch that one AFTER watching the original, and look for a special cameo (and RIP Anton Yelchin).

Available on: Starz/Encore

The Magnificent Movie Emporium pick (join the movie group by clicking the link if you enjoy discussing your favorite movies!):

SINISTER

Image result for Sinister

I love this one, too. It's got great twists and an even greater cast! Check it out, then head over to the Magnificent Movie Emporium Facebook group to discuss!

Available on: SyFy
